Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. (Hebrews 12:1)

Some days I love to imagine what this great "cloud" of witnesses looks like. Are they like fans at the Olympic games, sitting on the edge of their seats, shoulder-to-shoulder in a heavenly stadium, doing the "wave" and cheering when another of us crosses the finish line? Do they whistle and holler when someone finally removes the baggage and burdens that have weighed them down, so at last they can run at the pace God intended?

We do not run an easy race. It's rarely a smooth run around a track. We each have a different path that God has "set before us." Each of us has to run, walk or crawl at the pace for which we were created. Never be envious of anyone else's race and never try to run one for someone else.

Jesus Himself is at the finish line, with outstretched arms for us to run to Him, out of breath and empty because we gave it our all. Amazingly, He is also beside us every step of the way, cheering us on, supporting us, being the Living Water we need to make it to the end. Praise God we never run the race alone!

Heavenly Father, help me today to run the race you've set before me. Be my guide as I walk this life and bring me to yourself, that one day I will be part of that faithful cloud of witnesses cheering on others as they build your kingdom here on earth. Amen.
