But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:7)

The Gospel writers believed Jesus’ return was imminent. Though more than 2,000 years have passed, it has been brief when compared to eternity. Peter gave a wise admonition; as a Christ follower, I should be clear minded; being fervent in prayer and charity (love). God’s love covers sins. You might remember the first references to coverings in the Bible.

Adam and Eve sinned against God by eating the forbidden fruit and sensed their guilt and shame. In futility, they tried to cover their nakedness with fig leaves. The LORD (with love and mercy) made coverings of animal skins for the man and his wife. This was the first animal sacrifice; foreshadowing Jesus’ death on the cross as the spotless Lamb of God.  His love and shed blood continues to cover the multitude of sins; all have sinned. By grace, through faith, all have access to his covering.

Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. (Romans 4:6-7)

LORD, I thank you for covering my sins. Through your shed blood I am cleansed and forgiven. In Jesus name. Amen.
